Stage-1 Output Came Back Empty: Diagnosing the Data Failure in a Cricket Coverage Pipeline
The Stage-1 result is empty. This is not a routine technical glitch but a clear signal that the layer of the cricket coverage pipeline everyone was relying on returned nothing at all. A field-by-field check yields zero usable information: article title 'N/A', source 'N/A', article type 'Unclassified', one-sentence summary blank, author stance 'N/A', article purpose 'N/A', the list of information points empty, and the 'Entities Involved' field literally contains an instruction — 'identify from the information points above' — meaning that field was never executed and was merely filled with a template string.
Deep analysis is impossible on this basis. The reason is straightforward: analysis means examining stance, time sensitivity, source quality and implicit premises against concrete material. When the material itself is zero, 'analysis' becomes the construction of its own scaffolding — not journalism fit to put in front of a reader.
The only meaningful signal is 'Domain Label: cricket_world'. That establishes only that the subject is cricket. It does not establish whether this is a match report, a player transfer story, an ICC governance or finance story, or a piece on cricket betting and commercialisation. Those four demand entirely different analytical routes: performance and statistics for a match report; contracts, bids and squad balance for a transfer; rules, revenue sharing and member-board politics for governance; broadcast rights and advertising markets for the commercial angle. No single template handles all four.
Why did this happen? Three candidate causes, in order of probability.
First and most likely: the upstream input was empty or scraping failed. Cricket sites typically render scorecards and live blogs through templates whose main text is built by JavaScript. Conventional HTML extractors return an empty string on such pages. When the body is empty, every downstream field fills with its default value — hence the long run of 'N/A'.
Second: the classifier set the type to 'Unclassified' and short-circuited. The summary and stance modules almost certainly hang off type-based branches. If no branch matches, the general fallback extraction is silently skipped rather than run. That is a design weakness, not a data gap.
Third, and this is a genuine bug: the 'Entities Involved' field contains an instruction instead of a result. The field was populated from a template and never invoked. An output like that passing downstream without an error log or warning shows the pipeline's fail-stop mechanism is weak.
Accordingly, this report names no players, no match, no statistic and no quotation. Filling in what the input does not contain would not be journalism but invention. In a sports news report, factual accuracy is the most basic precondition; without it, length has no value.
The desk's next step is direct. First, test whether the fault lies in the extraction layer: run the same article separately through the extractor and check whether body length comes back as zero. If it does, fixing the Stage-1 prompt or model is pointless — the fix belongs in the scraping layer, for example headless-browser rendering or site-specific selectors. Second, general summary extraction must always run as a fallback after classification. Third, any template instruction appearing in a field should mark the pipeline as failed, so an empty shell never reaches publication.
As soon as the source text, an article link, or at minimum five to eight factual information points are available, a complete sports news report on this subject can be produced.
